“And this year,” she said . . .

It’s New Year’s Day, and everyone appears to be busy wishing everyone else all good things for the upcoming twelve months. In that spirit, may those of you reading this post take my good wishes with you, as you face the challenges and enjoy the blessings of 2012.

Another thing that many people do on this day is make resolutions.  I’ve tried that several times in the past. Once I even wrote down my big goals. It never worked. I admit, I sometimes felt like a failure because of my inability to follow through with something I had personally chosen. If  resolutions are supposed to have positive results, I hope my experiences with them are not typical.

This year, however,  I discovered a worthwhile use for resolutions. I found myself employing them as part of the character development for Calli Barnow, the protagonist in my mystery series. She’s not any better at following through with resolutions than I am, but they became one more level from which to explore her head and heart.

Calli and I are standing on the threshold of what promises to be an exciting year together. She’s going to be meeting a whole bunch of new people through her appearance in Oranges and Lemons in the spring, and she’s even started tweeting (@CalliBarnow). I hope to finish #3 book in the series soon in order to free up some time for other exciting projects.

There may be no New Year’s Resolutions in sight, but I’m confident that next year at this time I’ll be able to look back at 2012 as a year where I lived life to the fullest. In the end, that’s about as good as it gets for any of us.

Happy New Year to you and yours!
